No One
Who mourns for the little lumps of fur on the side of the road that no one notices?
Who worries that they didn't make it back to their homes with food for their families,
That they may have their babies on their stomachs waiting to be fed.
Sucking on milk gone dry
By the hours of decomposition.
The little skunks that wait idle behind their mother
Since they can not tell she has been hit,
One by one get crushed by another passing car.
Driving 80 down the freeway does anyone notice
That bloody trail
Cast over to the shoulder as some creature limped away
In the last moments and strength of it's life?
There is no burial,
No funeral,
No notification to the family that this animal is gone.
Some people look on as a unfortunate event.
Why did the animal venture so close to the road?
Did it not see that there were so many obstacles of destruction laid out before it
And its next meal?
Some people think that it is an inconvenience that it is there.
Another dead animal to ruin their morning or to stink up their car.
Don't even notice until the smell permeates their cabin.
Yet others look away as if they don't see it
Then the animal will not really be there.
Sadness is the contentment of the human population as
To what has been degraded to merely a name - Roadkill.
No matter that it might be someone's missing cat
Chased by the kids down the street,
The dog that got loose because the fireworks scared him.
A mother trying to move her family from an unsafe place to the hopes of a better one.
The father looking to find food to bring back to its shelter.
It is not the fault of the deer that the people have but a cement barrier between its home
And its food supply.
No one seems to think it is an emergency to give peace,
Dignity back to an animal that has been hit by a car,
Or a bus,
Or a truck.
911 won't take your call ...
unless it is blocking traffic.
There is a cat that lost his life
Under the overpass of Norwood
Every morning I see what his body has become
Through the sun and the rain.
No one mourns the life that is lost and the family that has been torn apart.
No one says a prayer or rest in peace when they pass by,
Giving the animal a equal place in the world.
No one, but me.
